How Long Does it Take to Make a Reality Show?

I'm watching Million Dollar Listing, the second season started after the finale of Flipping Out. Which, by the way, was less than finale-like (not sure what I expected).

One of the young brokers on Million Dollar Listing finds out someone he knows, Jay Bernstein, just died. Bernstein is known as the manager of Farrah Fawcett, and his website says she was with him when he died. He died in 2006.

How is it that this reality show took two years to get on the air?

I can't remember this guy's name, but we find out in the first few minutes that he finds his trainer attractive, and he is into men and women. He doesn't think his trainer is into guys, though.
