U.S. Gymnasts Get Gold, Silver in All Around

First of all, the girl that got gold is named Nastia. For reals. She was born in Russia but moved here when she was young. Shawn Johnson, left, got silver. Mary Lou Retton was in the stands to cheer her on.

I chatted with some real life young gymnast at a bday party, I think she is about 10, and asked if she knew who Mary Lou was. She didn't. What about Nadia? She did, but only from a gymnastics movie where they mention Nadia.

Nadia's perfect 10 uneven bars routine from 1976 below. Not sure who the scowling woman is they show watching with daggers in her eyes. I think it might been Olga Korbut who was on the Russian team. Olga won 3 gold medals in the '72 Olympics, and was suppose to be able to out perform Nadia. That didn't happen. That was back when Romania and Russia were major adversaries.

Nadia's perfect 10 was the first time in modern gymnastics; the scoreboard wasn't equipped to show a 10, so it reads 1.00.

Although, Olga Korbut performs the coolest uneven bars performance in the '72 Olympics.
