No Country For Old Farts

It's no surprise this movie is on best of 2007 lists and nominated for Golden Globes- it's a good movie. The Coen brothers had a few silly movies (remember the Tom Hanks talking weird one? Ladykillers?) and have gone the complete other way with this flick that I'm sure a lot of reviews call "gritty". Gritty suspense. Yeah, that's what I'd call it.

Also a good movie, but getting no Golden Globe nomination love is Ben Affeck's directorial debut. I know, who would've thought. Saw it last night and thought it was really good. Not as gritty as NCFOM, but has moments of suspense.

Zero grit and zero suspense but not bad is Die Hard 4. I thought the plot 'bad guys take over all the computers' was on it's way out when they made "Swordfish", but it gets revived here. You can't take it seriously. When the navy jet keeps missing when it is shooting missles at John McClain's car, or when McClain is holding onto the navy jet and swinging around and lets go and lands safely on concrete, its best to just wonder how they technically shot that scene and not bother with "that could never happen!"

Minor point, the jet was shooting at McClain's big rig truck. Just tryin to help out.
Have a great new year.
